Lift

Lift is a phenomena caused when an airfoil moves through a "mechanical fluid" such as air. The airfoil causes the fluid to be accelerated in a particular direction and, by preservation of momentum, the airfoil experiences an equal and opposite force. Thus by accellerating air downwards (creating the helicopter's downwash) the main rotor blades of the helicopter create lift upwards.
